Understanding MTSS and Assessment within a Science of Reading Framework

NASP CPDs will be awarded

Referrals and evaluations to address reading issues have significantly increased since the COVID pandemic. School psychologists and SLPs are being overwhelmed by their case loads, increasing our feelings of isolation and burnout. Worsening the issue, the school psychologists and SLP often do their evaluations independent of each other which leads to over testing and assessment redundancy. Through a true collaborative cross battery (XBA) evaluation, we can save each child over an hour of assessment time, increase educational classification specificity, and improve intervention recommendations for multilingual and English monolingual children. We can further strengthen our data interpretation through the Science of Reading lens and having a shared understanding of literacy instruction and delivery. By bringing all of these pieces together, we can enhance intervention implementation at all Tiers to increase student success. The presentation is designed for both the multilingual and monolingual school psychologist to enhance district level team collaboration. Free web-based resources for reading, writing, and math interventions will be provided.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Participants will gain a strong working knowledge of and ability to differentiate between language processing, dyslexia, and SLI, using the Science of Reading framework.

2. Attendees will have practice ready XBA model on how to organize, interpret data from all school based service providers. Case studies will be reviewed.

3. Attendees will learn specific interventions to address reading skills for monolingual and multilingual children.
